From the marvelous Villa Siline we drove through Khums, the nearest town to Leptis and then passing by Leptis we went to the enormous amphitheater and circus complex.The Leptis Magna Amphitheater is two miles east of  the Leptis Magna site, the main ruins, about 120km from Tripoli the capital of Libya.

;

The steepish hill gave our car some problems and I began to feel anxious and a bit sorry for our driver.  Well actually I always feel sorry for our drivers on these trips in Libya.  Richard is a demanding passenger and I am nervous and querulous and our travel needs are demanding often taking our poor drivers to places they have never heard off, places they don't believe exist and places that they are scared to go to.  Eventually we ground to a halt in a car park near the amphitheater which is about two miles east of Leptis Magna The tiers of seats rise steeply and access is gained at the top through dark passageways and at the bottom are tunnels carved through solid rock.  Cell like barred caves are in evidence of places to keep the people and animals prior to their participation in the gory performance

The circus and amphitheater built between 56 AD and 112 AD had a total seating capacity of over 35 thousand people.

Then we walked along the beach where ancient Greek and Roman columns lie waiting to be returned to there natural location within this antique complex.  We left the amphitheater area, returned to the car, and went to look for a hotel in Khums
